also, in the past exams, when they gave a "precondition", does that mean we have to ensure this precondition is met, or we assume this precondition is met?

here's a link with a couple of exams WITH answers: www.cs.toronto.edu/~mcraig/108/01f//(i'm just wondering does anyone really look at the old csc108 site anymore? there's some more exams under the tests section of the course site)

Preconditions are something that the user MUST follow before running this method.
So if you have a precondition like: /* *Precondition: This array is sorted */ int binarySearch (int[] sortedList) { . . Code . }
Then you can assume when programming that the array is sorted and you can do whatever you want (i.e. Any search method)

is anyone doing the december 2000 exam for practice??
how do you do number 5?
i.e. when your instantiating, they already gave you a constructor for Country with 3 parameters... how do you instantiate? (do not confuse this with creating)

Well, instantiating is the right hand side of the equals sign and with the 'new' operator. So it'll be ... = new Country(1,2,3); and you have an instance of a Country class.
