I recently formatted my PC and now whenever I restart my computer the ethernet card takes 2-3 minutes to be recognized. I'm guessing I have to set a default IP address instead of letting it search for one on its own, but I don't know which IP to use. I'm using Sympatico High Speed (DSL). Please help.

I'm using Sympatico but in the Sympatico properties my IP address is just set to 'server assigned' and my card gets recognized straight away. Is your default card set to the one you use?

I right-click the computers and select Profile Properties, then I go to the TCP tab and Server Assigned IP Address is chosen.
I only have one network card. I guess it's set to the default card.
I'm running Windows 2000 Professional. This is really pissing me off. I remember it was like this a few months ago and I used a generic IP address which fixed the startup time, but I forgot what it was.

try ipconfig on msdos then releasing all ur ips then renewing them or if in windows.. winicfg .. run it .. window should pop up..release all then renew all... sorry if it's just a stupid postI have no idea what you just said. Way over my head. EDIT: Well it seems that I am a fast learner and I tried that ipconfig dealy. It didn't help. I did learn however that I have no Connection-specific DNS suffix whatever that means.

sorrie.. it's winipcfg.. juss run from start button.. run there are juss 2 things u need... release all... which resets all ips and subnet mask to 0s it's like networkin sorta... then renew all... ur ethernet card along wif the modem should ask ur DSL provider i think for an ip and set that as default hope this helps.. and for the DNS thing i dunno if DSL is a network..i know cable is go into ur network settings, select ur ethernet card's TCP/IP.. under ip address, click obtain ip automatically WINS... select disable WINS under gateway.. nothing under DNS configuration for me i have enable DNS since i home networked my computers, for u, since u said u dun have it, select disable DNS.. try that.. =) hope it helps.. i might and most like am way off to the correct solution, but u can give it a try

Try calling up Sympatico.. you probably got your gateways messed up. That's probably your best solution. You can also try looking at www1.sympatico.ca/help/local/bell/setup.bell.html and making sure your setup is fine. I just quickly looked at their site and found that

i juss read ur other post.. generic ip... for my home networking.. i used 192.168.0.x x can be nething.. is ip number would not lead you to any sites or servers.. usually used for home networking.. there is another one.. but it serves the same purpose... and as for the subnet mask.. u can leave it, windows fills it in for u.. it should be somethings like 255.255.255.0

i m astonished i could actually helpWell, to be perfectly honest I found a site that gave me the exact same IP address and subnet mask literally 1 minute before I read your helpful post. But you were very valuable in confirming my findings. Now if only Zone Alarm Pro 3 didn't take so bloody long to load. If I only had money... I'll never own an Athlon XP with that spiffy DDR RAM!

aim higher ... go for RDRAM
...I spit on the overpriced lackluster RDRAM!! Intel finally realized that RDRAM is overpriced and DDRRAM is just as good. (AMD is still better [value] though 8))
